Switch Forwarding of Frame From Host to Gateway
Sometimes #CCNA and #CCENT candidates struggle the first few times they have to apply layer 2 switching concepts and layer 3 routing concepts in the same question. That’s normal – it’s a lot easier to learn individual concepts than it is to put 10 concepts together in a larger scenario. Today’s post continues the recent focus in this blog about switch forwarding, this time in a network with multiple switches and a couple of routers.

The Scenario
The figure shows a small enterprise network. The switches all have default configuration, unless otherwise noted in the question. The PCs have been configured, as well as the routers, so that it is possible for all hosts to ping each other. That also means that all the cabling shown in the figure works, and all interfaces are up.
On the left side of the figure, all switch interfaces default to be in the same VLAN (VLAN 1). Similarly, on the right, all devices sit in the same VLAN (VLAN 2).
The Question
Switch SW1 receives an Ethernet frame from host A. The frame lists a destination MAC address of R1’s F0/0 MAC. Both SW1 and SW2 have all default configuration, and neither currently has any dynamic entries for any tables. Which of the following are true statements about interfaces out which this Ethernet frame will be forwarded? (Multiple answers may be correct.)
A. SW1 F0/1
B. SW1 F0/2
C. SW1 G0/1
D. SW1 G0/2
E. SW2 F0/9
F. R1 S0/0/0
G. R2 F0/0

SW1 and SW2 flood the frame to all it´s interfaces, except the incoming interface, so B, C, D and E are correct.
the answer is: B,C,D,E
hey Marcos,
Thanks for all the posts yesterday! FYI, I’m away for a bit, but I’ll look when I get back. In the mean time, FYI, on the Q&A posts, each post typically has an answers post, so if you want to check your answers versus what I listed there… look at the bottom of the post, above the comments section, for links. Look to the link that points to the right – should have “answer” in the title. Hope that helps…
