How to Study after the CCNA Crash Course

Terminology Mind Map

When you create a terminology mind map, you perform a very effective type of memory retrieval practice. Retrieval practice helps you improve your memory of basic facts when then helps you process and learn deeper concepts based on those facts.

The point of the terminology mind map exercise is just that – exercise. Having a completed terminology mind map is NOT the goal. Learning while creating the mind map is the goal.

For each terminology mind map, begin using only your brain and memory, with no other notes! At the end of the process, you can use the course recording, your notes, and the chapters of the CCNA OCG books that mirror the content a Part of the CCNA Crash Course. To create the map, you will need a blank piece of paper and pens in two colors. Alternately, use a mind map application. Then follow a process like this:

  1. Pass 1: Within a day or so of completing new learning, create a terminology mind map from memory only.
    1. Do not use notes, view the videos, or open the books.
    2. Write each term you can recall on the piece of paper (or mind map page.)
    3. Group terms together or separate them based on what makes sense to you.
      • For example, if one term is further explained by three terms, place the three terms under the first term.
      • For example, list synonyms together.
      • For example, list somewhat unrelated terms on separate parts of the page.
  2. Pass 2: Within a day or so, update the original mind map, using only your brain/memory.
    1. This pass may not take long, and that’s fine.
    2. You may recall new terms or want to re-organize the terms – which is terrific for your memory.
  3. Pass 3: Update the mind map using resources other than your brain, recording those new terms in the second pen color.
    1. Use your notes from class.
    2. Use the list of key terms in the back of many chapters of the CCNA OCG books.
    3. Use any other source, but it’s more beneficial to use anything you used for original learning, rather than just Googling. Googling a term to learn about related terms is the opposite of exercising your brain.

Terminology Flashcards

Many of us have used flashcards to study something over the years. You may have used index cards or a modern app like Quizlet. Regardless of the tool, the idea is simple: a card with two sides. You look at one side and try to recall what you wrote on the other side.

Creating flashcards can help you learn more than using pre-prepared flashcards, particularly for straightforward facts. Your brain has to recall the main concepts, connect those to the terms used for those concepts, and think about the meaning. When you try to define a term or use the term in a sentence, your brain has to think of related concepts and terms – and that also helps you reorganize and strengthen your memory of all those related facts.

Creating terminology flashcards also shows you the terms you know the least – which tells you where you need to dig in a learn more.

Create flashcards for all the terms you can recall for any part of the course. To begin, use only your memory. At the end of the process, you can use the course recording, your notes, and the chapters of the CCNA OCG books that mirror the content in some Part of the CCNA Crash Course.

To create the map, you will need either (a) index cards or (b) a flashcard app like Quizlet.

  1. Pass 1: Create flashcards from memory only
    1. Do not use notes, view the videos, or open the books.
    2. Think of a term and create a flashcard with the term on both sides of the card.
    3. If you think of a term but do not recall if it was used in the course, you can include it.
  2. Pass 2: Within a day or so, review your cards, and add to them from memory – still with the term on both sides of the card.
  3. Pass 3: Within a day or so, define or use the terms for your best-known terms in a sentence.
    1. Spend 10 minutes, maybe 15 at the most.
    2. This works much better with a flashcard app!
    3. For terms you understand well, on the back half of the card, replace the term with either (a) a brief definition or (b) a sentence that uses the term.
    4. Do not take time to anguish about perfect grammar or meaning – just get some words down that make sense to you!
  4. Pass 4: Within a day or so, define more of the terms (or use more terms in a sentence.)
    1. Spend 10 minutes, maybe 15 at the most.
    2. Take another pass looking at terms that do not yet list a definition/sentence on the backside.
    3. Write a definition/sentence for the terms you understand the most among the remaining terms.
  5. Pass 5: Research remaining terms
    1. Do this in your timing.
    2. The terms you did not yet define are those you have the least confidence about!
    3. Review notes, watch videos, research in the book, etc., to learn more about those terms and their related concepts.
  6. Goal: Repeatedly think about the terms and their meaning over a few days.
  7. Not a goal: Creating a 100% complete and exactly correct set of flashcards!

The CCNA Official Cert Guide (OCG) books come with a large set of practice tests. When you purchase the books you gain access to those question banks. To use the questions, you can use a web app or desktop app, both of which go by the name Pearson Practice Test, or PTP.

O’Reilly hosts a subset of the CCNA OCG questions, specifically four CCNA exams of about 100 questions each. To use those questions, you navigate in the Certifications section of the O’Reilly site to find the CCNA practice test. Below are some suggested steps for using the questions to review and learn about the topics in any part of the CCNA Crash course:

    1. Use this link and then click to open the CCNA practice questions (the PTP app) in O’Reilly..
    2. Select all four exams.
    3. To choose to use questions from a subset of chapters:
      1. De-select all “objectives” (which refer to book chapters.)
      2. Select “objectives” for the chapters you care about.
      3. Note that the Volume 1 chapters are listed below the Volume 2 chapters in the list.

My blog site includes a series of lab exercises called Config Labs. Each shows a lab topology, some initial configuration, and a set of configuration goals. Your job: create the configuration to meet the goals. For more info:

Config Labs

Note that some of the labs found at the blog site go beyond the topics that fit into the time allowed for the CCNA Crash Course at O’Reilly. So, when you see any lab, take a brief look. If the topics look like something you already learned, go for it! If not, you can ignore the lab until you have learned more about the topic. (The labs do not attempt to teach the topic, but instead, they provide practice once you have learned something about the topic.)

Terminology Heat Map

Create a terminology heat map for the topics in this part of the course. For more detail about terminology heat maps, check the related tab in the top accordion element on this page (in orange). Or simply click this link. You begin the process using only your memory, but later in the process, you can review the recording of the course and also refer to the matching chapters from the CCNA OCG books listed below:

CCNA OCG Volume 1, Chapters 21 – 24

The following steps summarize how to make the terminology heat map.

Pass 1: Create a terminology heat map from memory only

Pass 2: Within a day or so, update the original heat map, using only your brain/memory.

Pass 3: Update the heat map using other resources, recording those new terms in the second pen color.

Terminology Flashcards

Alternately, create flashcards for all the terms you can recall for this part of the course, using only your memory. At the end of the process, you can use the course recording, your notes, and the chapters of the CCNA OCG books that mirror the content in this Part of the CCNA Crash Course:

CCNA OCG Volume 1, Chapters 21 – 24

Pass 1: Create flashcards from your memory only, writing the term on both sides of the card.

Pass 2: Within a day or so, review your cards, and add more terms, from memory, no notes – still with the term on both sides of the card.

Pass 3: Update the backside of the cards for the terms you know the best. On the backside, either (a) define the term or (b) use the term in a sentence.

Pass 4: Make another pass like the previous for the terms you know best of the yet-to-be-defined terms.

Pass 5: Research to learn more about the terms you have not yet defined.

Goal: Think about the terms, but more importantly, think about the concepts behind the terms!

Not a goal: Creating a 100% complete and exactly correct set of flashcards!

Goal: Think about the terms, but more importantly, think about the concepts behind the terms!

Not a goal: Creating a 100% complete and exactly correct set of flashcards!
